The restoration of the century has been defined, given the complexity of the intervention and the time taken to complete it. At a distance of 28 years from the fire, which has seriously damaged it, the Chapel of the Shroud has been reopened to the public, who can now appreciate the Guarinian masterpiece.
For Primat it was a challenge started in 2007, when it was called to conduct an experimentation for the identification of the most suitable technique and materials for the reconstruction of the stone elements, degraded by the violent fire.
The choice went towards the formulation of a specific mortar for the building site, which poured into preformed molds, could fill the missing volumes, returning the complex geometry of the architecture.
The formulation was not without difficulties: it was in fact necessary to identify a mortar with the right fluidity to allow the fluidity inside the formwork, setting times suitable for processing, compensate for the shrinkage phase to avoid tensions and cracks, excellent adhesion to supports, adequate mechanical resistance after hardening.
The geometry of the Dome is also very complex and the volumes to be reconstructed very different from each other for depth and extension. The colors of the marble were also different, a reason why more blends were formulated on the shades of Frabosa marble.
The positive outcome of the intervention was therefore only possible thanks to the collaboration between a team of excellence, which under the direction of the Ministry for cultural heritage and activities, developed a reintegration method based on laser scanner survey, 3D modeling , realization of high density polystyrene formwork in which to inject the Primat formulated mortar.
An intervention of excellence that has allowed us to return one of the main architectures of Italian baroque.
